Matthew's Garden. Leicestershire
Pictures taken: During construction and 2 years after
Client brief: To design a hard surface to provide wheelchair access throughout the garden.
The challenge was in the surface and its sympathetic construction in established woodland and gardens. After many samples were shown, my client specified small granite setts that I recommended being entirely pointed, so it would not make the pathway a rough journey. I took delivery of 26,000 of these, near 30 tonnes of hardcore and to be honest a seemingly endless run of cement. But slowly over a 3-month period the pathway meandered its way, cautiously throughout 100 meters of established woodland and gardens. The result is amazing and takes my breath away every time I see it. The pathway looks as though it has always been there, it doesn't bully or dominate its surroundings instead it instantly looked established and natural in its setting and just gets better with time. Most rewarding of all was that my client could now for the first time in his life enjoy his garden unhindered and unassisted. My most memorable garden. Thank you Matthew.
